Spike
“Spike’s Close-up” – Photo Date: September 1, 2008

EDIT: More than one of you have asked about Spike’s size.  I posted a comment in response, with a link to a photo that should give some scale.  For those of you who don’t read all the comment before you (*gasp*): This is my niece, Cierra, with Spike.  (clicky!)

    Is that a turtle?!

  2. Carmi Says:

I used to have a pet turtle, a red eared slider that I inherited from my brother. Kept her for over a decade until she died. She grew to incredible proportions over the years….but I never got a shot quite like this. Incredible!

  3. Smarmoofus Says:

Yup yup. Spike is my brother’s girlfriend’s tortoise. He was cage-raised when he was smaller, but he’s outgrown it now. He’s been hanging out in his backyard for weeks now. She is looking into ways to keep him warm over the winter months, or she may have to find a new home for him. My parents are rather attached to Spike, too, so I think they’re going to help her out. There was talk over the weekend of a small greenhouse.

Thanks, Carmi. Spike seems to like camera lenses. That made getting the shot quite easy.

i like how you caught him ’snacking’ hehe cute :)

  5. Smarmoofus Says:

*giggle* I watched him for a while yesterday, ciara… he never stops eating.

Hi there. I’m going to add your domain to my listing of domains that can use my images, since I see you aren’t trying to steal anything.! XD

I’ve been having a ton of trouble with kids stealing images from my site lately, so I’ve had to go about and turn on my hot-link protection.

Thanks for linking to Tails Tuesday!

  7. Smarmoofus Says:

Ohh! Is that why your button wasn’t working? I was just being lazy… normally I would create my own button (*points*), but I only threw in Tails Tuesday because this week my WW post qualifies, so I thought I’d link to you.

Great photograph! Such an expressive face.

  9. carol Says:

We found a painter turtle in our yard this summer. We think the kids next door tossed him over when they moved away. Anyway, we adopted him, he roams the yard and sometimes plops into the pond. He is such a cutie. There is no way we can keep him over the winter so we are going to take him to Pelee and let him go near one of the ponds there. Apparently they burrow into the mud and stay there over the winter months until late February.

That is a nice picture of Spike, he is a handsome turtle.

  10. Bodhi Says:

Fantastic shot! Looks just like Yoda.

  11. Mojo Says:

Spike is a good name for him. He’s go Spike-i-tude. Bring on that wascally wabbit. How big is he anyway? Hard to get a sense of scale here.

  12. Smarmoofus Says:

Does this help, Mojo? It’s my niece, Cierra (the future paleontologist), with Spike.

  13. Randall Says:

Incredible photo. But the blade of grass or whatever that is sticking out of his mouth looks like a thermometer.

Hi Spike!! If you were to move to Southeast Texas here by us you could just stay out all winter long and play with your friends.
Adi (the beagle dog) has a turtle friend. You would have to search Jim’s Little Blog to see her and other friend’s pictured. Or check Adi’s meme. :-)
    Happy WW!
