55 Flash Fiction: Proof

Thursday, July 31st, 2008 @ 8:00 pm | In writing...

This is my thirty-fourth 55 Flash Fiction story.  It has caught up to me, at last.

“Mommy,” she began, “do you wonder if you married the right person?”
“Oh, honey!” her mother said, stricken. “I know we seem to argue a lot, but your father and I belong together and I will never question my decision to marry him.  Know why?”
“Why?”
“Because,” she smiled, “without him, you wouldn’t be you.”

The story behind the story:

It is early on Sunday morning that I sit here composing this draft, post-dating it for future publication.  It is based loosely on a conversation I had with my mother when I was very young.  Most relationships go through rough patches, and my parents’ was no different.  But it all turned out well in the end.  I am me, after all, and they’re still together after thirty-eight years (well, it’ll be thirty-eight years next month).

Were ya just gonna leave me to twist in the wind? Where’s the love?
I’m up (but you knew that didn’t you?)

I’ve had this discussion many times, but never with my kids. I’ve used the same argument to justify marrying my eX-wife. (Now if I could justify the whY-wife…)

Gotta hit the trigger before somebody beats me to being your first for the second day in a row! (I love being your first…)

wow, that was a great one. i know w/o marrying my ex, i would have never had my two beautiful girls. guess it’s better not to question, eh? no sense in the ‘what ifs’. my parents are going to be married 42 yrs, and i’ve told them myself they need to divorce LOL but i think they’re just used to each other. one needs to take care of someone, the other needs to be taken care of. i’ll come back when i’ve posted my 55 later tonight. awww, and come on, let’s see some of your smarmoofus needs. hehe
