55 Flash Fiction: Large Party
For my seventeen-thousand four-hundred thirty-eighth 55, I offer you this short short tail. Er. Tale. (That would be funnier if my 55 was about a bobtail.)
“Good afternoon,” the hostess greeted the first two members of their party to trickle in. “How many will be joining you today?”
“Eighteen,” he said, without missing a beat.
The hostess mindlessly reached for the menus, her gaze following her movements, until the man’s response sank in.
“Eighteen?!” her panicked eyes flew to the door.
Story behind the story:
I admit it was quiet in the restaurant that day and the staff did seem to appreciate the easy shift, but would eighteen really have been so many? In truth, there were only six of us. In truth, the hostess was extremely relieved. But her double-take was hilarious. I’ve never seen such a dramatic one before, and it was great fun to watch.
