55 Flash Fiction: New Laptop
It’s fifty-five, and Iiiiiiii helped! Wait, “helped”? No, no… I wrote the whole thing, all by myself. *proud* I made this!
Re-installing her applications went smoothly enough — she had the installation CDs. She wasn’t too worried about remembering her favourite links, either. If they were that important, she’d remember. She thought the tricky part would be remembering passwords, but even all of those important ones were carried over.
Still, she hated starting over.
Story behind the story:
I had a really good and really bad day yesterday. And the bad part was three weeks in the making, only I had no idea it was coming. The good part was taking my cousin to her appointment in Little Rock, because I learned that something that I’d helped her with resulted in a decent amount of money coming her way. And she rewarded me with treats (lunch, a tank of gas, and a really really cute sweater). I was pretty pleased with myself and my new sweater as I dropped her off and drove myself home.
But then I came home to find out that the router had been “upgraded” back to the one I blogged about three weeks ago, with which my [old] laptop refuses to communicate. Worse, I’d loaned my netbook to my brother’s girlfriend’s grandmother because she recently had surgery and wasn’t able to sit at her computer desk comfortably. So my plans of coming home to gloat online over my job well done were foiled. Twice over. So today… *mutter*… I had to upgrade to a new laptop that wasn’t nearly five years old and containing the least compatible internal wireless card ever mass-produced.
I’m still getting used to the new keyboard; the new operating system (Windows 7, which is kind of a blending of XP and Vista… not bad, but less “manual control” than I would prefer); and the lack of my bookmarks, files, and everyday applications. I’ll get there, though. It’s just overwhelming to think of the years of downloads I have to remember to replace. And the years and years of music and photos I have to transfer over.
*whine whine* Poor little rich girl… *mock sob* I disgust me.
Anyway, specs for the technically-minded:
- 3GB RAM (upgradeable to 8GB!)
- 320 GB HD
- 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon II processor
- 15.6″ (diagonal) widescreen LCD display, 1366 x 768
- 6.0 lbs
- Windows 7 Professional

“If they were that important, she’d remember.”
Great line and so true about life in general. Well, except I have a terrible memory. I’m up as well. See you next week.

Nice 55 and computer specs. I am starting to get use to my netbook and I’m enjoying it so far. I almost wish I had gotten the one with the 12″ screen but this one is more compact, and it has a keyboard that’s 90% the size of a standard computer keyboard so I’m happy with it. Although I won’t complain since I’ve been using my iPhone as my computer for months now. I’m happy to have a real computer.
YAY COMPUTERS!!!
PS. I will have to get use to typing I’m instead of just Im because the netbook doesn’t put the punctuation in automatically like the phone would.

Mr. O: hahaha! I know! We have some of the same toys (iPhone, Asus EeePC), so we have a lot of the same “problems”. Don’t you love how lightweight your netbook is, though? It’s so compact! *swoon* Did yours come with XP, too? Or are they shipping out with Windows 7 now? This OS is not as customizable as XP, or I haven’t figured out how to do it yet.
Chef Kar: I will upload a photo of the sweater. Well, the photo is when I tried on the plum coloured one, but I got the black one. But close enough, right?
G-Man: Are you traveling?
Dr. John: That’s what’s so frustrating. If they’d left the router alone, my old laptop would’ve been just fine. It still works everywhere but here (I know, because I took it everywhere last week, and it worked in places where the local’s computer wouldn’t connect). *ponders all the people she knows who need an old-but-new-to-them laptop*

My new sweater, only I got it in black. And I don’t always stand with my hands doing Vogue.

If you don’t already have one, may I recommend a USB hard drive? Lifesaver. And not at all outrageous. I picked up a 500Gb Seagate at Target for maybe $85. Def.in.ite.ly. worth the money.
Sounds like you got a good system, and knowing you I’m pretty sure you got a good deal on it. So it’s a happy time! Plus, you got the cool new black sweater in the deal. Choice!

I have one. 250GB one for $58 about two years ago. At the time, it was an amazing deal on the HD.

Computers, like cars, seem to be a necessary evil and when problems happen they are a real pain. My 55 is HERE.
